Drawing as a way to explore....

Traveling through the mountains whether at speed on skis or in a car, or slowly on a hike or mountain bike is the most wondrous saturation into a landscape, comparable only in my books to swimming, surfing or being on a boat in the ocean.

I love the way you feel complete immersion in nature, with all the senses on high from such strong energy from these mighty peaks. They speak of adventure, pursuit and possibility.

The complete bliss I feel from taking in this landscape compels me to draw it feel closer to it, to feel more connected.

This photo of me at age 8 captures the essence of how held it feels to be nestled into a mountain landscape. The red teddy bear tracksuit helps with the snuggly feeling too!

Tracing the geometry of the rocks worn down from millions of years of erosion was the first time I started on this style of drawing where I capture the essence of a mountain area.

MOUNTAIN JOURNEY COLLECTION

I create because drawing, painting and mark-making bring me into the present.

The repetitive lines, the restrained palette, and the slow building of form act as a grounding practice. My work is a way to pause the noise, honor quiet moments, and make sense of the world by distilling it down to essential marks.

I guess you could say I've been obsessed with mountains for a while now...

When I was a baby, my family moved to Alberta Canada from Sydney Australia, and I seem to think that my travels through the mountain regions from my car seat in the back were etched into my mind permanently.

After finishing my undergraduate degree at The National Art School in Sydney, I moved to the small mountain town of Thredbo in the Snowy Mountains. Initially my plan was to mountain bike for the summer, though as the snow fell I felt compelled to stay for "one winter".

One Winter Became more like forty...

This "one winter" turned into decades of winter as I travelled the northern and southern hemispheres teaching skiing in my beloved mountains. All the while, I sketched and painted as I immersed myself in these sublime landscapes. Two winters a year in mountains was complete immersion.

I searched for a way to capture the experience of moving through the mountain landscape, and developed my first drawings from four wheel drive trips through the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

I was compelled to capture the geometry of the specific ridge lines and peaks. Like fingerprints, these simple geometries spoke of the history and personality of the mountain. The relationship of lines show the geology of the region. Almost like features in a persons face that makes them who they are.

There are similarities in mountains around the world, and there are distinct differences, and I sought to capture these basic geometries that speak to the essence of the forms that give each mountain region it's identity.

Why make art?

It's hard to put into words as an artist what compels one to want to capture visions and feelings.

I only hope that by capturing these ways of seeing and feeling, I can share the beauty with others.

So, why give away free art?

In the same way I feel this pull to capture the beauty of the mountains, I feel compelled to share this with others, and I know buying original art is not in everyone's budget.

Quite simply I hope that by bringing beautiful art into people's homes, I can contribute to making the world that much more fabulous than it already is.
